I recently purchased a replacement cat convertor for my cracked and aging one on my 82 900T. I bought the Magnaflow version of the proper length and shape that was recommended by Summit Racing's purchase guide. On their reciept included in the box was a legal notice stating "Not legal for use in CA on any polution controlled motor vehicles." Since I live in CA, I was baffled that they would send me something which wouldn't pass a smog test. I was also baffled by the idea that a catalytic convertor can't actually convert. I called Summit for clarification and the person I talked with put me on hold to inquire from more informed sources. He came back saying he talked with Magnaflow directly and they confirmed it would not be legal in CA. Wanting a second opinion I called Magnaflow and they put me in touch with their technical dept and they stated that the specific CC I bought would work just fine (pass smog) on my car. The mixed message confusion was over the year of my car and current testing standards for cars 95 and newer. Todays cars have the more advanced emissions monitoring systems which require several O2 sensors placed before and after the convertor. The legal notice on the Summit invoice was their standard disclaimer, but turns out it didn't apply to me. Of course, I won't really know for sure until I install it and try to pass the test this coming December. I don't see why it won't work. It's basically the same unit (same core) as the one currently on my car, but designed to reduce flow restrictions at the inlet and outlets. Anyone have any good/bad cat replacement stories to relate?
