alright everyone, i gotta start off by saying im ALMOST sure this isn't a belts issue, but here goes...
when i get on the boost in my '89 900T, anywhere above maybe 8 or 9 PSI the car begins to make a screaming noise that gets louder til the APC cuts boost back (usually around 12 or 13 PSI) or i get off the gas. needless to say, ive been avoiding boost since it started happening.
it's not like any turbo whistle ive ever heard - more than anything, it's a really unpleasant scream. i can't think of a better word to describe it, the noise it's making sounds just like the word "scream" should. :-)
the car's not boosting any less (well maybe a little less) than usual, but this noise is worrying me. it only happens at higher boost pressures, and i can't make it happen with the car standing still - revving the engine does nothing, i need to be making boost for it to happen. and it's almost definitely coming from the drivers side of the engine compartment, near as i can tell from inside the car.
i just recently replaced a few of the easy-to-access vac lines with silicon - would this have caused the hoses that are still the old rubber to take more of a beating and therefore fail? i was planning on doing them all, just haven't gotten around to it. or do i need to be thinking about a turbo rebuild - can an impeller that's out of whack make a noise like that? or one of the rubber connectors on the intercooler? car runs great, just returned from a 1000 mile trip to NC and back, it started doing this during the first 500 miles, during the drive down and while i was down there - so i don't know what's going on. anyway, thanks for any input!
