What you've described sounds more like a major mechanical malfunction than something electrical. I would absolutely first verify that the cams are properly installed in relation to TDC, and that BOTH are lined up with the proper markings at the same time. That is, be sure the timing chain isn't stretched, and that the guides & tensioning components are doing their thing properly. I'd verify that the distributor is properly installed in the "base" position, and that the ignition has then been properly timed. It's worth doing a compression check - new-to-you motor does not mean a head gasket, rings, or valvetrain in good shape.
AFAIK, there is no scenario where any electronic component malfunctioning could cause the symptoms you describe.
