Yeah, that's a good description. Here's what I'm wondering though - if I had access to the inlet side of the old cat, which I didn't because it was welded to the down pipe, I'm curious if it would have been possible to refurbish it by cleaning off the core with a stiff wire brush to open it's many air flow veins. With the new cat you can hold it up to the light and see through, whereas the old one had 2/3 of it blocked by baked carbon. After a good brushing or scraping (whatever works), if I could see light through it's entire core, I would then have to guess it's been refurbished. Maybe not out-of-the-box new condition, but certainly better than what I had. I'll guess the crack was the result of too much pressure building inside. The crack was just before the core on the inlet side, so there could be merit to that theory.
