Auto trans doesn't have a flywheel, and no you don't need to pull the engine to change the flex plate, the part with the gear ring that the starter engages and turns. Please review a shop manual to understand the engine/trans/flywheel orientation of the Saab c900. I'm not an auto trans saaber, but I don't think this is all that unusual a failure. It shouldn't be that costly to repair with a used flex plate.
