How far do you have to tow the car? Can't get a flatbed to do the transporting? Good point (RS) about the wheel bearings if you have to tow it a long distance. If I was in your situation and had to tow my car a lengthy distance and make sure the wheel bearings remained intact, I'd remove the axle spider bearing, allowing the axle to spin inside the inner driver cup. Sure the splined axle surface will probably eat away at the inner driver bearing surface and make a clatter while doing so, but i.d.'s are easily replaceable. Of course, to remove the spider bearings you have to unbolt the upper steering knuckle bolts to allow the axle to pull free from the inner driver. And to do that you have to first unload the suspension coil spring with spacers (like old brake pads). All doable, but you have to follow the proceedures.
