The first Saab head gasket I did took me eight hours the first day, and about eight hours the second day. I swore I'd never do it again the whole thing was so traumatic.

But of course I did do it again, and I've done it about eight times since then, and each time I get faster. Honestly, I still generally take two days, but now it's about three hours per day instead of eight. Three hours, take the head to a machine shop for inspection, and another three hours.

Something you may or may not wanna hear: While the head is out, be sure you do the "other things" that are oh-so-convenient with that big piece of metal out of the way. Change the power steering pump mount bushings, the alternator bushings, the water pump, and the belts. That stuff is a trivial add-on in price, and makes you feel better about the work you've done... not just a head gasket, but a whole bunch of (easy) preventative stuff as well! If you're really ambitious, changing the side motor mounts is a helluvalot easier at this point, too...

Good luck, and remember to keep a cool head. If you get tired, stop. A rental Focus is $25/day through Enterprise, and that's a lot cheaper than dealing with rounded off bolt heads and stripped out threads that result when you're working tired or frustrated... :D
