Let me start by saying, drip tray drain works, is free of debris. Runs like a spigot on humid days. And, I have a strong suspicion that the previous owner may have had just about everything out of the engine bay at some point, including the evaporator.

The gasket between the firewall and evaporator housing/drip tray is leaking. Although it is evident from rust at the base of the opening that the water is running down the firewall, water also seems to be seeping on the 'inside' of the gasket, where it meets the drip tray. i.e. it seems that the gasket is not seated properly (no kidding, right?), relative to the sheetmetal, housing, and/or drip tray. I'm just not clear on how the seal, the housing, and the drip tray were intended to go together and be watertight.

Is the tubular gasket supposed to be sandwiched between the edge of the firewall opening and the drip tray/housing? Or is it supposed to sit against the interior of the firewall? Right now, it seems like the gasket is not connected to the firewall or the housing/tray. I could get a finger between the rubber and the drip tray if I pulled down on it enough (but I'm afraid of making it worse). Pulling on the gasket a little exposes what I believe is adhesive. But I'm not sure if that was adhered to the housing or the firewall.

I'm concerned that if I simply gunk it up w/ silicone, the water will still sit against the firewall, until it rusts enough to run into the footwell again.

Does the drip tray go through the firewall, or is it to butt up against the gasket and/or firewall? I know this was a pre-86 retrofitted item, so I'm wondering if I can temporarily remove the tray to get a better look at the situation, and re-install after sealing or adjusting the gasket.

Thanks for any insights.
