Buy an amp to power your rear speakers. Crutchfield has great explanations of how to choose speaker/amp combos. Install it under your back seat, probably on p-side (making sure your car doesn't leak and flood the back floor pan). You can bolt it down, but it's not critical. If uncomfortable wiring it, see if your mechanic will run the wiring for you, then do the rest yourself. Don't waste your money on a stereo installer. Head units are pretty powerful on their own these days, but once you've used even a modest amp, you'll wonder how you survived. You'll want a head unit that can take RCA-Inputs from the amp, for better sound. ONly your fronts will be wired into the wiring harness. Splicing the wiring harness just takes some patience, but is definitely DIY.

In my 86, I have 6" Alpines in the rear deck, as the previous owner had cut holes. The hatch of a 900 acts like a nice resonator, sans subwoofer. However, on my 91, I got 4x6 replacements from Crutchfield, and installed them in stock locations. Unless you're entering competitions or you have neon lights under your car, a reasonable amp/rear speaker combo is going to give you all the bass you need.

I put 4" compoenent speakers in my front grills, all you need to do is drill a hole in the grill for the tweeter. Nice upgrade, but any 4" speakers will be alright, so long as you take the wattage of your head into account. Your fronts won't be doing much work if you get an amp anyway.

Personally, I don't think there's much difference in stereo manufacturers. Some of them are much cheesier in appearance and gimmicky than others, but beyond that, try to be brand-blind, and choose based on output.

Finally, I suggest moving your head unit from the dash to the center console, in front of the shifter, where the stock EQs went. If you listen to classical, keep the EQ. Otherwise, lose it. Easier to work on your stereo in that location, less of a theft target, and cheaper to fix if your stereo does get ripped off. Up top, they'll destroy your entire fascia and dash. Center console costs $20, and won't destroy the dash.
