My '86 SPG has about 346k on it, and my 91 SPG has 175k. Owned for 13 and 3 years, respectively. All of the other poster's points about differences between pre/post 86 are valid. I personally think some of the weaker links on later models were the convenience/amenity things SAAB did to try and keep up w/ the other marques. More electrical stuff=more headaches, so I love the solid state nature of my 86. I'm generalizing here, but mileage in cars of this age is more an indication of the previous owner's commitment to the car than wear and tear at 225k vs 150k. Stated another way, if you plan to own the car for only a couple years, and don't want to fix it, opt for the newer/lower mileage ride. If you're willing to commit to maintaining a car of that age, the availability of an experienced (underscore that) C900 mechanic will contribute much more to your happiness than some of the mechanical or aesthetic distinctions between pre/post 86. If you've always wanted an spg, and plan to keep it for a while, I'd recommend waiting for a really clean CA/AZ/TX ride w/ no rust on it. It'll be worth the airfare and a couple days off to get it home.
