I just went through this myself - even got my EPA certification so I could buy one of the alternative refrigerants.
In the end, I gave up and went with R134A... Why? Because charging up with some other refrigerant means if you ever have to take the system apart, you have to find someone who will reclaim whatever you put in first. With all the obscure choices out there, that shop may be near impossible to find. I couldn't find anyone locally who would deal with anything other than R134A or R12, and I didn't want to deal with having a system full of stuff nobody would suck back out of it. Yeah, you can vent it, but that's either immoral or illegal, or both.
Anyway, FWIW, on a 1993 900S with the original hoses & compressor, I replaced the receiver/dryer and the expansion valve, and the system blows very cold. It's only been in the 90s around here, but I kept nice and cool inside the car...
