Thanks for the replies so far...

here's the story. My 84T (automatic) has 210K miles. The engine runs "pretty good" but it is blowing some oil by the rings (I think). It mostly collects in the air cleaner. Compression seems good.

I plan to pull the engine/trans to fix the trans. I have had some problems with a flickering oil pressure light when the engine is hot so I want to check the main bearings. I also expect the timing chain and/or tensioner to be worn to "replacement" specs. So while everything is apart I was wondering if I should do a rebuild.

I could do nothing but reseal the oil pump and do the normal "engine out of a Saab" stuff and cross my fingers but due to not having a lot of free time, I only want to pull it and replace it once. I could put in a used engine but they tend to be a pig in a poke and I know that my engine has been well maintained most of its life.

BTW - the body while nice for a 22 yo car is not perfect and a fresh engine is likely to outlast the body.

So would most of you opt for the cross your fingers approach?
