Went to rescue my daughter's convertible, 90 miles away. Unfortunately it is not the kickdown cable or low fluid. I believe this auto trans is toast, with 173K I can't complain. It is also making a metallic rattle inside the trans, that seems to make 1 clank per RPM. I decided to try to drive a little closer to home, since the trans is allready shot, had nothing to lose. After a few miles and a little warming up, it fnally shifted into 2nd, and eventually third. I managed to get it all the way home at highway speeds.
This gave me plenty of time to think about options:
1 - Replace with a rebuilt auto trans
2 - Swap the engine & trans from my 90 SPG
3 - Place ad in TSN for both Saabs, all extra parts, and get her a Honda
As I try to look as this as objectively as possible, I'm starting to lean toward option 3. Main reason is at her age (it's her 1st car)she has no appreciation for what she is driving. (there is ¼" of dust on the dash, guages so dirty, can hardly read them, garbage piled in back seat) she treats it as basic transportation. Selling these cars on the open market separately would probably not fetch mutch apart, but worth much more to Saabophiles. I bought my 1st Saab when I was strapped for cash and needed reliable transportation. I found out about TSN after my 1st visit to the Saab parts counter, where they asked $42 for the hose from expansion tank to water pump. Without TSN I certainly wouldn't have stuck with Saabs so long, as outside repairs would have banckrupted me several times over. My daughter does not share my Saab obsession, and I feel she is now unworthy of keeping her convertible, that Dad can always fix. I ain't getting any younger, I allready had a quadruple bypass, and I'm doing a lot better financially. The last time I owned a Honda, I almost forgot where I had my toolbox. I'd rather my tool box got ¼" of dust rather than the old Saab's dash.
