bad week - 2 identical engine failures!

On monday, our 1993 saab 900s (2.1L 155000km) developed a shuddering knocking sound on a 1 hour highway drive, and lacked power on hills. Then off the highway at slow speeds (50-60km/h) the shuddering got much worse. When I turned the car off, the fan did not come on (it usually does). We had the car towed to a mechanic who did a compression test - nothing on cylinder 4. Car was fine before hand, and no coolant or oil loss.
Today, while borrowing my dad's 1989 saab 900s (2.0L 125000km) coming off a 5 minute highway drive not exceeding 100km/h (preceded by 15 min at 60km/h), we experienced *exactly* the same symptoms (right down to the fan not coming on at the end of the drive). We have not had that engine tested yet but it sounds bad. The engine was running perfectly before this drive (I drove it yesterday, it ran perfectly).
Any idea what could be wrong? Am I a bad driver? Is this a fluke? The only other commonality I can think of is both were filled with the same grade of high octane gas (from Ultramar). The stations were different but nearby and we had never used either before (although I have used Ultramars elswhere in the past with no ill effects). Both cars have always only used 90+ octane gas. I find it hard to believe it could be the gas, except that it was a knocking sound we heard...
any thoughts?
thanks a lot!
James
