sobtom,
At an absolute minimum; Pinion bearings, crush sleeve (goes between pinion bearings), complete gasket kit, engine to tranny gasket. Other hard parts commonly needing replacement; a 1-2 shift fork, a reverse idler gear, a reverse mainshaft gear. Synchromesh balk rings should be checked but are usually well within spec's. It used to be standard procedure to replace the three large shaft nuts but now most DIYers would re-use some or all of the old ones if they are in good shape. Look closely at every bearing and the thrust washer on the countershaft. Look closely at the synchromash unit springs and spring retainer plates and snap rings, especially fifth gear. Closely examine the upper chainwheel bearing and the aluminum "snout" that it fits on. Your layshaft should be OK being a later unit with a sleeve in the rear bearing. The stack height shims should be replaced if they are hammered badly. If there is an inner driver (or two) that is worn now is the best time to deal with that. Any other hard part in the gearbox can be damaged of course and the usual approach is to find good used pieces. If the ring and pinion are shot look for another whole unit. The value of a good used R. and P., coupled with the cost and effort of the rebuild pretty much exceeds the value of a good used unit. See some of my earlier posts for advice on rebuilding, particularly recent posts to "Siegfried". There are two or three good sources for new and used parts that advertise on this web site. A few of the parts (if you want new) have to come from Saab. Be very careful of swapping parts from one gearbox to another. Without going into detail, there were a few changes in things like gear teeth angles and counts throughout production. For simplicity try to scavenge using gearboxes of the same year as yours when possible. Get the Saab factory manual section 4 (for your model year) if you can. Good luck.
