ABS Electrical Puzzles Posted by mike900s [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Ref: 1990 900S manual
Situation:
1st: ABS warning light doesn't come on at switch on - and hasn't for many moons.
2nd: Bled rear calipers per Bentley procedure (using ABS pump).
3rd: After bleeding and topping up, brake fluid warning light came on and stayed on.
Add'l info: At switch on, after sitting overnight, ABS pump started right up, drew down fluid in the reservoir to the correct level, and shut down after about one minute. Brake warning light stayed on and, assuming it worked, the ABS light would probably also have stayed on. The brakes functioned normally throughout a 10+ mile run of local stop and go, including hard test stops. I assume the ABS pump also functioned during the run because the fluid level did not rise, or fall. After the run the fluid did rose overnight as the bomb bled back.
Solutions?:
First, I really need to fix the ABS warning light. There IS a bulb in the board, which lights when pulled and tested separately. This really puzzles me because, if the circuit is broken, the light should come on at switch on. The circuit appears to run straight from the ABS control unit but I'm not sure how to test back to there. All suggestions and guidance will be welcome.
Next, why the brake warning light? The fault could be the fluid level switch but I'm guessing the ABS pressure switch because of the failure circumstances. Si/no? How do I test the pressure switch? And, if it has to be replaced, what is the procedure? (Hopefully, the master cylinder/ABS assembly doesn't have to be yanked).
All of your brainstorms will be much appreciated.
