For the first few minutes, the fuel injection computer relies on engine RPMs, the NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) sensor, and the measurement of air through the Air Mass Meter to determine how much fuel it feeds the engine.
After 4 or so minutes, it adds the O2 sensor into the control loop.
Generally, poor running before the O2 sensor means that the AMM is starting to go (or has already gone) bad.
This doesn't mean that you don't have any vacuum leaks that need to be fixed, though.
If you have a generous and understanding friend with a good-running '88 through '90 900S or an '89 or later 900T, see if you can borrow their AMM and put it in when your car is cold. If it runs well, then you need to replace the AMM. If you try this, make sure that the last three numbers stamped into the black top of the AMM are 011. If they're 005, you can damage the fuel injection computer.
