Hi, thanks for reading. I have an '86 900T 16V.
At full boost (11-12psi) I have a ticking/clicking noise that could be described as someone tapping a screw driver on a vice, quite mettalic and sharp. It then slightly drops boost, (only a couple psi) It's hard to tell if the knock noise and the boost drop is directly correlated.
Just to confirm, is that engine knock/pinging?
I've tried a few things to try and locate/fix the problem:
-Timing set to 16 BTDC off boost, 10 BTDC on.
-New plugs BCP7ES gapped at 0.025"
-Newer wires (Borgicord)
-The Bosch cap and rotor look fine
-It has a newer FPR, 3bar.
-New fuel filter
-Couldn't find any intake air leaks.
-Ran a can of seafoam through the pcv valve hose, then ran techtron concentrate in the tank to help remove possible carbon build ups.
-Running 94 octane fuel.
I have a Volvo front mount intercooler and a 9000 redbox (un-tweaked)
The car has 230k miles, and it runs and pulls really well otherwise.
I can't imagine the noise is from the APC solenoid as I have tried 3 different ones with no change. I would think the solenoid wouldn't be very audible at full boost due to engine noise. Can a faulty APC control unit cause an soleoid to click loudly?
I've been trying to sort this problem out for months, and I'm not getting anywhere, maybe you folks can help?
Thanks for your insights!
-Rob
