From personal experience, what you have encountered sounds very much like an ignition control unit failure. This had me stumped for quite a while on my own car. Very quick to check if you have a spare from a junkyard. One from an early 84-89 VW golf or rabbit will work just fine too. A quick way to diagnose (in the absence of a spare) is to hook up a timing light to any of the plug leads, crank the car, and watch the strobe. The light will flash (indicating that you have some kind of spark) but it will be completely erratic. When i was trying to track down this problem on my own car i found the presence of spark quite misleading, leading me thinkt hat it was some kind of fuel-related problem. It was only after a fuel pump replacement (with no improvement) that i went back and looked more closely at the spark.
The other cuplrit that I suppose could cause these symptoms is failing hall sensor wiring in the distributor. However, usually this is an all-or-nothing type thing. Either the car runs or does not on a sporadic basis. It is unlikely to cause a condition where you get poor idle or an inability to rev beyond a certain point. Since you have replaced the distributor without any change i would probably discount this. As for the connector itself- i suppose it could go bad but you should be able to see whether the wires are frayed/broken or not.
