I bought my 1990 SPG in 1998 (I think?) and have no plans to sell it. 64,000 original miles and, well, not doing many more on a yearly basis. I will outlast all other 1990 SPG owners! :)
Seriously, I have found the best approach with Saabs - if not all used cars - is to just budget $50 a month for repairs. You may not need that $50 for six or eight months, but that ninth month it's really nice to have $450 to spend... :)
What I've been doing for years is just completely dismantling whatever car and putting it back together with new parts. Usually costs around $1000, but those repairs last for many years. When I bought the SPG, I put $1400 into new pumps and seals, and it's just now - eight years later - that it's needed anything. My 1986 900S went 60,000 miles and six years before needing anything on top of a one-time $1800 bill. I bought a 1988 convertible, did $500 worth of work, drove it 15,000 miles, and sold it. The new owner has done another 5,000 with no issues... 20,000 miles for $500? Awesome.
As far as I'm concerned, that's the approach. What really got to be frustrating was fixing one CV boot only to have the other go a month later, or replacing the alternator only to have the water pump start leaking. I like the "pull the motor out and do a crapload of work one weekend" scenario much better than the "spend two hours every weekend of my life" deal. Sure, things break unexpectedly, but I've found the less taking apart and putting back together is really good for my, um, emotional state. ;)
Down with new cars! Reuse, recycle, renew! ;)
