New/Old heater valve

Saabers;
More than likely , the older Saabers would know the answer to this question. I have a 1980, with the original stlye heater valve(metal) My question is: Will the later style (plastic) heater valve work less changing the accelerator pedal? I recall doing this conversion to my 1984 Saab in 1991, and had to change the pedal as apparently the newer style interfered with the pedal travel.
Thanks
