Starter Button Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I finally decided to tackle the starter button for 1990 SPG. "Something" is wrong with my ignition switch, and it makes inconsistant contact in the Start position, meaning sometimes the car will start, sometimes it wont't. Really annoying.
The image below is the system I made to start the car. The DPST relay is an old fuel injection system relay and actually makes the starter go, and the SPDT relay is an ABS system relay and does the "load reduction" - it kills power to everything provided by the +54 circuit when the starter is spinning. The factory ignition switch does the same thing, and obviously installing a button circumvents that bit.
I used a Defroster switch as the start button, mounted where the A/C switch would normally go. Since I don't have A/C, I don't need the switch anyway. The Defroster button is nice because it looks totally factory (although bright red :), and sits in the dash as it should. It's "unique" because it has no on or off position - it's just a momentary switch. Perfect for spinning the starter!
Now starting the car is a simple matter of turning the key to Run and pushing the button. I am going to try and figure out a way to reuse a cruise control pressure switch or something similar to make a clutch pedal lockout function, so nobody accidentally spins the starter while the car is running. In the meantime, at least the car starts reliably... :D
