Never heard of it. What's your source?
I typically only go for a four-star shine, and wax will not improve how the underlying paint looks by much unless it has a cleaner or polishing compound in it.
In my experience (including three years at a dealership) the best way to go is to your local doll-up/detailing supplier (check in the phone book). Most of what you get at auto parts stores is watered down, overpriced stuff that does a halfway decent job or costs too much. Most suppliers have a "house blend" wax with a very light cut polish mixed it. That'll get the paint looking better and throw on some wax, then you can use straight wax the next time(s) you do it. Or, if you have unique circumstances (my car is in white and I lived in atmospheric-pollutants city for a few years) you can just use that all the time. It may not last as long as pure wax (say 4 months instead of 6) but it's a nice multi-purpose wax that's good for an older car.
