Siegfried,
Sorry I couldn't respond to your post on Wednesday, my computer took a dump and I'm waiting for a new motherboard to show up. Here's the deal on differential carrier bearings; They wear pretty slowly, probably about half as fast as pinion bearings (assuming that they're set up right and kept well oiled). As I've said in other posts, modern bearings are made to very high dimensional spec's and as a result you can almost always get away with just replacing them and then putting all the shims back just as they were, no need to go through all the set-up and measuring. The big round shims between the main case and the aluminum axle bearing housings must go back just as you found them, don't swap them side to side or add or remove any. If you do that you'll have the right side bearing preload and ring gear backlash. Put some thread sealant on the six bolts that hold each of those axle bearing housings to the case also or all your oil will leak out. If you are considering rebuilding a T-37 (C900) automatic I strongly recommend that you first read the Saab (section 4) service manual and scout for the perishable parts that you'll need. Those are getting increasingly hard to rebuild properly owing to diminishing stocks of good used hard parts. A good used pump or front clutch drum is a rare item and they almost all need those when they crap out. Unless you have access to a mountain of T-37 cores and lots of spare time to disect them for good pieces then consider swapping in a 5 speed. Good luck.
