I used a heavy duty shop degreaser (purple power) on the heavy stuff and wire wheel cleaner on the light stuff and painted areas. I put the degreaser in a spray bottle to get it directly at the worst areas. You might want to get six or so cans of brake cleaner as well for cleaning around the electrical components.
I wouldn't recommend using any kind of acid (citric) or petrolium based products on the painted areas. Wire wheel cleaner works well there if you get the kind that is safe for painted surfaces. Wire wheel cleaners have surfactants in them to aid in rinsing away crud.
After you get things cleaned up it is a good idea to use soapy water to remove the solvents afterward so as not to get cloudy paint or hazing on any parts. Mix up some car wash concentrate in a spray bottle and spray everything down, let it sit for a while, then rinse.
Various size synthetic bristle paint brushes, old toothbrushes, and parts cleaning brushes are my tools of choice. You don't want to use anything too stiff, let the solvents do the work.
Don't use deisel fuel if you are cleaning it over asphalt. It will eat into it and soften it up. My neighbor had a leaky fuel line in his diesel-powered car and it ate a hole in his driveway overnight where it was dripping.
