I just did something similar, but in the engine compartment.
Best advice I got was to drill a 1/4" hole through a 1" X 2" block of wood, then cut the block in half. Use this and a C-Clamp to hold the rigid fuel line while you tap the fitting into the end.
Cut off the least amount of line you can get away with, just in case you kink the line while tapping in the fitting and have to start over (Like I did!)
Bentley recommends removing the line from the car (to get away from the fuel) and using heat and a special tool to install the fittings, but tapping them in with a hammer seems to work well, too. Be careful, as the fuel line is easily kinked!
