Well, I have a 91 900T and I went to the junkyard and got a new instrument cluster for it. I heard back from a lot of people on a previous thread that I must have gotten a just a little older version of the same thing because there is one different clip on the back than the one I have. I took apart the whole cluster from top to bottom of my old one. I got every part out and looked at it. It seems that the speedo cable actually ONLY controls the odometer, which makes me wonder why they call it that. I also found out that the clip next to the speedo cable must control the actual speed that shows up on the speedo. It must work by electromagnets too because there is no actual contacts or serious points of interest. It is just a clip that comes off and sort of rests on the copper coil on the inside (which when it spins moves the speedo pin). SO, my plan is to take apart both and try and just replace the metal inside part of the new speedo with my old one so that the old clips will all work and the only thing that will change is the connection to the "odometer" cable, which was bored out by over-use (on the old one) causing it not to function. SO, to replace that, I need to take everything apart, hoping that they both have the same inner workings, just different clips. I hope this is the solution, because it is kinda delicate, labor intensive work, but I wonder if anyone has tried this kinda thing before and knows that it will/won't work before I try it...
Thanks for all your help. I know pretty well what is going on in the dash now, so if you just have an explanation that the years have different parts, I know this already. I am really only looking for whether the different models have the same inside metal piece that connects to the speedo/odo cable in the back and to the actual odometer inside the part...thanks again for everyone's help...
