The rough start might be the air mass meter or AIC valve.
By rear area of the trans you mean the clutch end, check to see if the upshift indicator sensor is broken off - it's a couple inches back from the clutch housing on the passenger side of trans and about half way between where the trans & engine mate and the bottom of the trans. Mine was broken off and when the trans oil got warmed up, it was coming out of the hole big time. I've never used the upshift light ( took out the fuse when I bought my car in '86) so I plugged the sensor mounting hole with a gasket and bolt.
An '86 probably needs a new radiator - mine did this past year with only 86K on the ticker.
Check to see that the wire is connected to the temp sensor located on the rear of engine ( front of car) by the thermostat. The connector is a simple female connector that clips onto the sensor and could be easily dislodged. The fuel level sender in the tank may be kaput or the wiring might be bad at the sender - it's under the floor of the hatch and is the smaller round cover on the right side, the larger lid covers the fuel pump.
There are several loose wiring connectors under the hood of my car - notably on the right side - these are either test connectors or are connectors for different markets.
