Not quite sure if there actually is a problem with your cat at all. Two things come to mind:
You say you notice a bit of a growl? I suppose that this could result from hole in the cat or a leak around one of the two bolting flanges. The later could be cheaply repaired if things were not too severly corroded. The catalytic material inside can break apart but that frequently results in a buzzing or rattling (rather than a growl). In my experience exhaust growls tend to come from other spots in the system (mufflers, mid-pipes etc.).
Also, you say that you can boost just into the red. In my experience this is exactly where the boost should be unless you have modified the APC box/injectors/vacuum advance in your car.
If you still end up removing the cat just do the straight pipe as others have suggested. No need for any kind of resonator- the turbo and the rear muffler are sufficient to keep everything quiet.
