If the hall sensor is bad (located in the distributor on a turbo car, by the way), your tachometer will drop to zero when the engine cuts out. I think the same thing will happen if your ignition module is bad. The coil, plugs or plug wires would not cause a tach drop. Have you checked for arcing in the dark?
You may want to check the turbo bypass valve because it can cause driveability problems when it fails. I think this is what was causing hiccups in my 92 turbo (fingers crossed). It would usually do them shortly after I let up on the pedal after accelerating. The old one would hold a vacuum, but the piston operation was pretty stiff compared to the replacement I put in.
