Unless the car could be had at considerable savings (the kind of savings that would likely be unacceptable to you) i'm pretty confident that the interest would not be as strong from buyers in the US. It seems to me that the problem is really one of the supply and demand.
The US used car market is is what . . . approximately 10 times the size of the Canadaian market? If someone in the US is interested in a 1987 convertible then they have much greater beter chance of finding one in good condition, the correct colour etc., with low mileage in the States. Unless your car is very rare or in exceptional condition with low mileage it seems unlikely to me that someone from the US would bid (or at least not bid aggressively). Any hassle, even the perception of importation hassle, would just not be worth it.
Of course, all this works in reverse for Canadians looking to buy US cars. Yes, you pay a economic penalty as everyone in the importation process takes their cut (GST, PST, AC tax, RIV fees, registration fees etc.) but you have a much greater number of cars to pick from, at lower initial prices, and in the case of southern cars, rust free vehicles.
I would suggest that you are probably most likely to get interest from other buyers in Canada as the number of vehicles for sale here is quite limited (particularly SAABS) and most Canadians are also shy about importing from the US(even though it can actually be advantageous). What's likely working against you however is your location. Those salty Toronto winters are hard on cars (no matter how well maintained) and value falls accordingly. In other words, even within Canada your market is a bit limited as someone from the West coast (BC, Alberta) is unlikley to bid.
Anyway just my thoughts on the matter . . .
