Last week my front right wheel bearing died on me. Actually, it died the week before, but I ignored the obvious telltale symptoms thinking I had at least a week of driving to be able to locate a used (cheap) replacement spindle/hub unit for my 87 vented rotor and brake system. No luck with the replacement, so I opted to have the old bearing pressed out and a new one installed. The parts supply store where I but parts has a machine shop in the rear for doing all sorts of work, including press fit bearing replacement. You bring in the spindle unit, they do the work for only $25. Perfect. But, when they removed the dead bearing, it revealed the hub was shot. So I began to hunt down a replacement hub from whoever and wherever I could find it. A local indie SAAB shop in the LA area said he had one for $100! I had no choice given that my car was sitting on jackstands and I had an important job to get to the following day.
At the shop, the owner began to sort through a pile of spindle/hub assemblies. Knowing I needed a hub for the vented rotor system, he instead pulled a solid rotor unit, telling me the hub would work. I balked, knowing from my own experience, plus reading here, that there is a size mismatch. He argued differently and had me almost believing he was right. He being a long time SAAB mech, and the owner of the shop. To assure me, he offered to seperate the hub and compare it's size with the destroyed hub I happened to have with me. His once clean hands now grimy from handling the old dirty spindle and aligning it in the press, he popped the hub out, and sure enough the hubs didn't match. So he pulled another solid rotor unit and seperated that one, and again saw the mismatch. Eventually he found a vented unit in the pile and I took that one, no need to seperate the hub. It amazed me that even an experienced SAAB mechanic didn't know about that size/difference issue.
