well, brakes locked up cuz you stomped on them and Posted by baggsly [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Lock & Unload, tibbidoh ![]() |
with your brake light on that meant you didn't have abs available to you. the car did exactly what any car would do when you jam on the brakes. the function of abs is to allow you to maintain control by your wheels staying rolling while slowing you and allowing you to steer, which obviously didn't happen when you noticed smoke and squealing tires :-).
luckily for you both, it sounds like the worst case senario didn't happen, but it may provide you a reason to determine the problem. i'm not sure, but i think a shop with tech 2 stuff may be able to tell you which component has failed, using the abs test plug under the shifter accordian boot. my local indie was able to tell me my light was due to bad clockspring or airbag contacts using his. does your horn work? (often a clue to clockspring).
a lot of people end up unplugging the bulb to avoid the reminder that their abs doesn't work, but otherwise, without the test telling you where to look, you're going to have to go by process of elimination and component testing.
i'm glad you're ok and there was no damage to anyone and/or their cars. on the plus side you got a good idea of how quickly your car will stop and what you might need to do if it happens again. that and if you live in snow country, panic stops in snow work better with non rolling wheels forcing snow to pile up in front of the tire aiding your stopping distance, so it's not all bad!
mark :-)
