I'm sure I'm not alone in stating that I rarely use the passenger side front door to enter the car or unlock it to get inside. I can't remember the last time I've had to unlock it from the outside for any reason. It's always locked and unlocked just like all the other doors and trunk should when I lock the driver's door from the outside. So this weekend I was serving as a driver for a legendary grand dame of the classic jazz world. I spent the day cleaning and waxing the car (restored 82 T 900 4 door) and then drove off to pick her up for an event in Hollywood. Thinking it would be a nice gesture to unlock the passenger door to let her in first, I walked her to the door, inserted the key, turned it and ...nothing. Thing wouldn't unlock. It felt as if there was no restriction when the key turned, suggesting something wrong with the linkage. WTF? Thanks continuum. I had to walk around to the drivers door and unlock it from there. The rest of the evening went well and the car drove beautifully, and any remaining rattles were drowned out by the hot music coming from the sound system.
Bothered by that little door lock flaw, I spent almost the entire day today tending to that issue. The problem was simple enough - the linkage had seperated from the lock mechanism - but I decided to refurbish the entire lock and door handle assembly. I took the door handle apart for a sanding and repainting of the flat black. When I pulled the lock assembly, I was surprised to find that it was held in place with a silicone glue and no lock clip was used at all! After sanding a repainting that piece, I now had to replace it and somehow fix it back in place. I looked for a spare clip that I swore I had in one of the parts boxes, but no luck. Two spare lock assemblies, but no clip. I decided I could temporarily do without the trunk lock and pulled that clip. I'll head out to the local j-yard this week where I'll nab a clip or two from one of the many 900's always found there in numbers. In the meantime I have a piece of black gaffers tape covering the trunk hole. The trunk pops open easily with a flick of the lever just inside the hole. The pass side door lock works perfectly now, and looks fantastic with it's new paint job. I also sanded and repainted the wiper arms. Of course, now I'll have to detail the remaining three door handles! Next weekend.
