...Headliners in some sections need to be countoured and stretched. One must use materials with give. Vinyl utilizes a less giving fabric back to prevent it from ripping apart. Also, over time, it can bubble and fall. Vinyl shrinks with time and can distort and pull off.
Ultrasuade comes in many different strengths and stretch designs, so it 'might' work. Problem is working with stretchy fabrics means needing to really concentrate on bilateral symmetry of the rows of stitching. Otherwise you will look lopsided and bad. Ultrasuade is light and should remain suspended. Headliners also have a plush rubber foam underside to soften the look and feel. It also lessens the visibility of underlying defects.
I suggest recovering with regular headliner material, and THEN covering with a second layer, the ultrasuede.
MHO, as a former interior shoppe/detail shoppe boss.
