You'll want to pull your rugs and insulation to expose the firewall and floorpan, if you haven't already. Besides drying everything out, it will help you trace it. And, you can assess any rust that's been developing on the floorpan.
Water can migrate all around the winshield trim, nothing's obvious when it comes to water. You can confirm whether it's the windshield, or run a bead of silicone around the entire w/s.
I recently sealed a leak on my 91 where the evaporator housing passes through the firewall (I think what you're calling the re-circ hatch is the evap housing). Strange leak, in that all the drains were clean and functioning, including the drip tray. It made no sense, and I never did really isolate the source. But resealing the rubber around the housing seems to have stemmed the flow.
I'm also currently dealing with a leaky seal at the front of the door of my 86. Looks like water somehow migrates to the inside of the rubber weatherstrip that attaches to the door, instead of keeping it to the outside. Still working on that fix...
Good luck.
