Ben,
Great that you are thinking of taking the plunge. I did it recently - always loved 900 SPG's and finally decided to actively look. I looked for several months locally and on saabnet, eBay, etc... and stumbled upon a stock, one-owner, '88 SPG with 75,000 original miles. It was a great find.
My advice would be to take your time, do your homework (check out this site which is an incredible reference, talk with some owners as you can, talk with a reliable indy mechanic or two to get their opinions) then be ready to pounce when the right car comes along.
I think there is also a shift in philosophy that needs to take place for folks getting into older (and quirkier) cars from Japanese cars. Modern Japanese cars are ultimate appliances - they are predictable, reliable and easy to own and maintain and rarely impose upon one's day with a car that won't start, a new leak, a new noise, a new stutter, etc... It is very easy to become used to that sort of convenience and trouble free driving. If your new (old) SAAB is to be a daily driver, be prepared for some inconvenience, an occasional time when it won't start, an occasional time when your plans will be derailed becasue of the car. Most people who love older cars are willing to accept that in tradeoof for driving a car with true character and experienceing a real driving experience....
Well good luck to you.
