You can install the new seal at a different depth so its lip lands on a good part of the metal. The failed rubber has most to do with long oil soaking from a bad main seal I think, not much with age.
I'd rather take my chances with a 20-year old Swedish original or shell out the bucks for a new Saab part than trust some of the Asian replacements that are out there - - especially after reading horror stories about new pulleys taking out Hall Effect crank sensors, if your car has one.
Of course if it's not your own pulley being put back into your own car by you, and you judging the old seal depth and putting the new one in to a different place, it's a tougher judgment call.
My cheapo fix against ever having the crank pulley squeal was to drill 3 holes thru the bottom of one of the pulley grooves into the hub, and press in 3 roll pins. Makes it kind of hard tail but I have never noticed any undue vibration since and I dare it to ever spin even if the rubber goes to hell.
Posted it here under "Poor Man's Crank Pulley Fix" if I remember right.
