Help.
'90t, been in an accident, cooling hasn't run right since (bought post accident to rebuild, don't know if problem before accident or not).
I've got 2 possibilities that could be causing problems, the temp gague and the cooling itself. Temperature gauge starts out okay, but as it gets warmer, it eventually 'jumps' to H and gets stuck. if I flick the gauge with a finger, it goes back to roughly the previous temp reading. This does not work after temp gauge has been reading 3/4 to H or so.
Possible thermoswitch problem. Fans don't ever kick on, even when switch on AC. If I short the thermoswitch across the terminals (while in-radiator), the fans kick on immediately. Also kick off near immediately when remove short, so I'm not worried about the relay. I replaced both the temperature sensor in engine and thermoswitch in radiator, and this problem still exists.
Several questions:
1) electrically, what is giving the temperature reading on the gauge? Is it the wires from the thermoswitch? Is it the additional sensor type thing that I thought was connected to the AC sensor in coolant line near engine block?
2) Is the thermoswitch an analog or digital type of device? In other words, when it hits 89 or 82C, should it switch to a closed circuit (short) or is it a variable resistance that drops below a certain resistance value at that temperature?
New thermoswitch ant temp sensor I put in are Wahler bought from eeuroparts.
3) How long should I be able to drive if granny-driving in say 50 degree F weather? This is to help me troubleshoot. I can typically drive about 10 miles never going above 2500RPM before temperature reaches H. Does that sound about right? Even then the fans aren't kicking on, but I'm using this to guess how well the temp gauge is working.
Any other advice, tips, suggestions, or troubleshooting methods would be greatly appreciated.
