I took the afternoon off to head to the local j-yard to find a door lock clip. I knew I'd find as many as I wanted. Sure enough, two are now mine. While there I had a delicious taco lunch at a favorite Mexican roadside eatery. Got in the car to drive back, pulled onto the main road and heard an odd metallic scraping noise. I was in thick traffic so I assumed it was someone elses car or truck. To my horror, it turned out to be coming from my car! By listening with the windows down while driving I reasoned it was a wheel issue, and not coming from the engine. So I pulled over to take a look underneath to see if I somehow picked something up and was rubbing against one of the wheels or the axle. Nothing evident. Driving some more, it sort of sounded like a dying wheel bearing, but not quite. This was very loud, as if it was something outside of the hub unit, and it wasn't constant. So I had to do it: I turned onto a nearby residential street, parked along the curb and commenced removing each wheel to examine brake systems and suspension parts. One by one, each wheel, hub, brakes and suspension assembly checked out fine. No play and nothing unusual, and no noise either. That had me worrying it was something in the engine, so I started it and let it idle while looking and listening. All seemed normal. Perhaps the tranny or clutch? That would be the worst case scenario! All I could do was drive on and accept whatever disaster I had coming my way. Sure enough, the sound returned once back on the road. By sticking my head out the window, I was able to isolate the sound coming from the rear left wheel. Then as I drove more, I remembered where I'd heard that sound before - it had to be a loosened dust shield bolt, one of three small 10mm bolts located between the rotor and the dust shield. I had one fall loose inside the front wheel many years ago. Because there's nowhere for it to fall out, it just tumbles against the turning rotor and get's stuck between the rotor and dust shield which causes the scraping sound. I'm sure my rotor is scored. How badly I'll find out first thing tomorrow when I remove it. For a continuum incident, this one hurt especially given that it happened just as I pulled away from the scrap yard! Spooky!
