Also, if you keep the tank at least half full until you get the parts to do the work you should not be stranded again. :)
Lastly, run the car down to 1/4 tank or so and perform the work either outside or with the big garage door open and the trunk at that end of the garage too while you have the pump out.
One way to keep the spilage to a minimum, after you have all the parts and tools at hand, is to remove the fuel pump fuse from the main fuse site and let the car idle until it stalls. It will require a little more cranking on the restart but no much (less if you remember to replace the fuse!). this gets rid of most, but now all, of the fuel pressure. that way when you remove the pump from the trunk, and you have to undo the banjo bolt to do that, you should not get as much fuel spray. But, you still may have some so be ready with paper towels or rags. then put them outside to let the gasoline evaporate rather than explode!
