I've had an AMM Fail on me when it was really hot outside, not when it was cold. When it was cooler the meter was fine. It can cause stalling out, especially at lower speed or when turning when they are going bad.
The one that died on me was so bad that I couldn't even get the car to start after it stalled out. If I could get it to start it would die right away. I let the car sit for a few hours and the meter cooled down enough to get the car started, and ran long enough get it home. Removed that meter and replaced it with a known good used one and the problem disapeared.
Has the AMM meter ever been cleaned? What kind of air filter is being used in the car? Paper filters won't be much of a problem, but if you are using a K&N has the filter been over-oiled? CRC makes a spray cleaner for Air Mass Meters that you spray into the air passageway to clean it. The hotwire for the meter could have a good layer of crud on it, affecting it's ability to detect the airflow on the wire.
Also, make a trip to the junkyard and get a used one with the same part number to try. You should be able to get one for around $25-$30 at a you pull it junkyard. Before installing it in the car use the above cleaner to clean it.
