Hi Whitesaab,
I just reread your string on this subject...i had something similar on a rebuilt box some 10 years ago. It would grind to a halt...lots of hot smells...turned out to be 5th gear syncho was dragging. The box would work fine ...in 5th...though it did pop out of 5th also. In lower gears, esp. 1st & 2nd, the box would 'drag' and even occasionally lock up...esp. when hot. I took off the 5th gear cover plate under the manifold but could not resolve the problem. Turns out the pinion shaft was set too tight in the pinion bearing housing; the shim set was set up inciorrectly so when the primary case was re-assembled to the main gearbox case, pressure was brought onto 5th gear synchro...with the 5th cover was off you could actually engage 5th gear AND other gears at the same time.
So...do you know if this 'box was recently rebuilt? Perhaps whoever did a 'rebuild' was unaware of how critical this pinion bearing shim setup is....cos if it's wrong...5th gear synchro is getting cooked!
Good luck....hope this helps.
