Many leak paths are possible (from some old notes):
Combustion gas to outside
Combustion gas from one cylinder to an adjacent cylinder
Combustion gas to coolant passage
Combustion gas to oil passage
Coolant to cylinder(s)
Coolant to oil passage(s)
Coolant to outside
Oil to cylinder(s) <--rare?
Oil to coolant passage(s)
Oil to cylinder(s)
Oil to outside
AFAIK, there is no singular definitive HG leak test, but they would include:
A "Block Test", "Head Gasket Testing Kit", or "Block Combustion Leak Tester Kit" at the coolant expansion take: chemical changes color when exhaust gases are exposed to it (fairly reasonable DIY, IIRC)
Coolant system pressure test
Exhaust gas analyzer to detect coolant at tail pipe
Pull spark plugs and see if one (or two) is much cleaner than the others
Cylinder leak-down test
Compression test
Used Oil Analysis (UOA)
Other tests?
Sometimes applicable pairing two of the tests above will yield more info and be more definitive
It's almost always better to replace a bad HG sooner, rather than later, potentially saving milling the head, a tow job, reduced engine longevity, etc
Not for the original post per se, but related, the head should be inspected for cracks, if called for
