It takes about a half hour to remove the old brushes and solder in the new ones, once you get the old regulator out.

If I had to do it the second time it would take maybe 5-10 minutes because I'd know what tools to use and exactly how to do it.

Couple tips...use a large gun, not an iron. 325w weller works pretty good. make sure the tip is clean and shiny. Use rosin core electrical solder, NOT acid core plumbing. Modern plumbing solder is higher temp anyway and the acid is no good.

Use a dremel tool to slice the pigtail off close to the solder, then heat the solder and tap the joint...the old solder falls off and generally the old brush and pigtail come right out (the spring will often, umm, spring the old brush out!) leaving a nice hold to put the new pigtail/bushing in.

I think the new brushes come with a couple of bushings...you generally put the pigtail through the spring and pull the pigtail/spring up through the regulator, aligning the new brush so that it will connect properly with the alternator slip ring, slide a new bushing over the pigtail down to the solder joint and let the pigtail out enough to allow the brush to come almost out of the holder, maybe 2-4mm left in the holder, then crimp the bushing.

solder the bushing/pigtail to the regulator contact, let it cool, clip the excess pigtail, and you're done. One thing...do the mechanical crimp on both pigtails before you start soldering...that way you can do both at once. Make sure the solder doesn't bridge the two contacts.

Wala...the brushes cost me maybe $8 five-six years ago and the brush/regulator assembly costs over $50. There are several regulator assemblies that will fit as well...the voltage is on the IC and you want the one with 13.8v if you have a choice.....
