Aha. Sounds like it got squished in the vertical dimension based on what you just said.
Try this. I'd put it top DOWN on a soft rug/pad, grab the underside portions of hte dash (under where the glovebox is, under where the steering wheel is) and slightly tug. There's a metal frame inside of the outer padded/plastic portion of the dash, and if you are VERY careful you should be able to bend it back / pull it up toward you just a slight bit. Be gentle The main worry here I guess is that you crack the dash somehow doing this .. that's why I suggest doing it on the bottom part.
Fitting tightly on the fascia and that vent won't be a problem once you get them in there.
Years ago I got a dash out of a 93 for my once loved 85 SPG from english swedish in atlanta. It had been in a side impact and the dash was bent up a little bit. I manhandled and it fit brilliantly, looked brand new.
