I lucked out when the ignition cylinder on my '88 broke - when it broke the cylinder came out so the car could be started with a screwdriver. There's a weak spot in the aluminum lock cylinder casting that can break after years of stresses.
Depending on exactly what broke, you may not need to remove the shifter assembly - you will want to pull the console and the driver's seat, though.
If the lock cylinder is broken like mine was, here's the procedure for taking it out.
The shifter assembly has plug that you need to drill out to access a pin which holds the lock cylinder into the shifter assembly. The plug is at the 8 o 'clock position (it may be different in the Central and Pacific time zones, check with your local timeclock administrator.)
First, try to turn the key to the position shown on the Bentley picture and push the pin in - if the right part of the cylinder is broken, it will still turn enough so that the pin will push in and you can pull it out.
If not, you'll need to knock the pin all the way in with a drift and use the key to pull the cylinder out - hopefully it's not too gummed up.
There are numbers punched on the side of the cylinder that a locksmith (or the dealer) can use to order a new cylinder to match your key. When I ordered mine, the dealer said it would take a month and it arrived in a week.
If, however, the gearset is messed up, you'll have to pull the shifter assembly and do some more involved work. You won't really know until you get the lock cylinder out.
