Thanks Vern and Diskullman for the thoughts. Having lived in New England (RI, by the way), I know what a cancer rust can be. The rust still looks rather contained, and based on the looks of the "Safe T Patch", it's repairable. As there is not an indie within 40 miles, I don't have a 'local guy', and perhaps I panicked. I've lost cars to rust ('70 Chevelle for one). The opinions I got from indies were on the phone.
Recalling DougM's old post and pics of his repaired 900 in the same area, mine does not appear nearly as bad -though I have not ground away the undercoating. I'll revisit and keep you informed. In the meantime, I've ordered a new shaft (the original reason for looking in this area) and I'll look for someone local to weld that repair.
Thanks again for the input.
Joe
