Walt, all-- This idea is perhaps consistent with my latest observation-- The new Bosch VR that I considered defective actually works just fine in a known-good alternator. That makes it almost certain that my problem lies with the alternator in the '88 and your suggestion seems quite reasonable. I've pulled the alt from the '88, will take it to a local electrical motor shop tomorrow to explore options.
