There are several bearings that suffer quickly when run without oil. You might remove the dipstick side cover and give the main cluster gear a jiggle. The small needle bearing inside it's rear end may be hurt (although you'll have to completely disassemble the unit to fix that). You haven't said under what conditions this whining occurs (right?) but gears, especially final drive gears will tend to be noisy if they have been run dry and gotten very hot. Oh yea, That upper chainwheel bearing is only made by Timkin now (I think) and they work as well as the old SKF. Cheers
